Babbacombe Pier is an ideal place to fish but is very often busy due to its well protected location, Cary Arms pub and close proximity to a car park and a good walk down from Babbacombe Downs, where there is free parking at the Cricket Club.
There is a very steep hill going down to the beach and pier and is not for faint hearted driver or a car with no power! Be warned about the car park; this is privately managed and you will be wheel clamped if you don’t pay. Up to 2 hours costs £2 and 4 or more hours cost £4
Due to its very rocky location its all float fishing and feathering/spinnning during the day with bottom fishing at risk of losing tackle and best at dusk/night/dawn if you chance it. Disabled people should have no problems after parking as the route to the pier is flat and well maintained.
The pier can get very busy and sees a lot of locals who can take prime spots early in the tide movemement. The local diving schools also use this area and this can cause some friction, but only if you fish toward Oddicombe. Face Teignmouth and out to sea and all is OK.
As with most rocky areas around the bay there are a lot of wrasse, these can be avoided by extended casting and types of bait. However if you want to catch a decent size one then try peeler and worms and ledger! Other catches are mainly Mackerel, Garfish, Dogfish, Whiting, Pollock.
Most people float fish and feather/spin in the summer months and catch good numbers of mackerel. The odd bass can be caught but generally at night or very early morning. Try floated prawn or sandeel (buy them at the Teignmouth sand bar/beach)
If you don’t cast well or like crowds then go to Hopes Nose instead as there is much
more space!
